all about steering gear boxes?
well, my steering gear box in my jeep grand cherokee is bad. i need to know a couple tid bits of information. first, do i need any specialtie tools for using a rebuilt kit to rebuilding my steering gear box? do i have to drain any fluid when i take it off? can taking the gear box get the steering out of alignment? Any of this information answered would be awesome. Thanks:)
Be careful about making the preload adjustments on the steering gear. You can cause some real damage. That’s best left to a qualified, experienced mechanic. Sometimes you need “specialty tools” to make the adjustments. You WILL have to drain the fluid if you disassemble the unit. Be sure to mark the pittman arm location on the shaft so you can get it back in the correct location/position so your steering wheel will be centered properly. It will have no effect on the actual wheel alignment.
