I have a ford expedition and batteries keep draining. What is it?
98 ford expedition. Went through 2 batteries. Sometimes it works fine and today again, I couldn’t start it after a long drive. Jump started it and it started but when shut off, is won’t restart again. The battery voltage is pretty good. Radio works, power windows work. Could it be the alternator or belt?
If your alternator is good, the next step is to check your door latches. The expeditions are notorious for faulty door latches that can trigger the dome light intermittently causing a parasitic draw. Next is the GEM (generic electronic module). These vehicles have had issues with water intrusion from windshield leakage that results in rust, corrosion and damage of both the GEM and the fuse box. If the windshield has been previously leaking, recommend it be fixed to protect the replacement fuse box and/or GEM. If you have a bad GEM you may also notice lights coming on randomly, even though they are switched off (such as the dome light) the radio may not work intermittently, windows not working properly, etc.
1. Most Ford vehicles since 1995 have a Body Control Module (BCM) called a Generic Electronic Module (GEM). Since some accessories work after the key is shut off, the GEM keeps certain systems powered up for up to an hour after the key is shut off. A draw of 200-400 mA is completely normal for that 1 hour time period. After the timeout, the GEM should shut off the relay and shut down all of the systems. At that time the draw should be about 30 mA with a maximum of 50 mA.
2. On a battery that has a 70-hour reserve it would take about 210 hours (or 9 days) for the battery to go dead with a draw of 300 mA. Retest the battery and charging system operation.
If it is your GEM, they are VERY expensive…I think when I priced one about 2 mos. ago it was around $500. It must come from Ford, and an NGS (New Generation Star) scan tool is required to learn the GEM, so it must be at Ford for that too.
All I cam say is, I hope it’s your alternator. The GEMs are VERY common problems on these.
