Any suggestions on good combinations of mbunas?
I’m setting up a cichlid community in a 4′ L x 18″ W x 21″ H aquarium and have decided on mbunas does anyone see any problems with mixing the following?:
Cobalt Blue Zebras (Pseudotropheus zebra)
Electric Yellows aka Yellow Labs (Labidochromis caeruleus)
Rustys (Iodotropheus sprengerae)
Bumblebees (Pseudotropheus crabro)
Red Top Ice Blues (Pseudotropheus greshakei)
I’m following advice I found on a website to have 1 fish per 15L of water.
Any suggestions on changing this line up?
That stocking level sounds ok, but you must be diligent about water changes. That said, a little crowding is good for keeping aggression in check. Just keep in mind that most mbuna are harem breeders. Having the females outnumber the males is better for everyone.
Yellow labs and rusties are docile for mbuna, so I see no problems there. I believe the Ps. zebra species is actually Metriaclima estherae, where the males are blue and females are red (orange). Good luck finding blue males in the hobby, though. There’s a good chance that your yellow labs will mate with the red zebras, so there could be some hybrid fry in your tank.
I have read bad things about bumblebees being highly aggressive, so I’d ditch those. Don’t know anything about Ps. greshakei, but per some cookie cutter setups I’ve seen, it’s compatible with the others so you should be alright there.
I want demasoni, which are another crazy fish. Maybe some Ps. saluosi, socofli or acei instead of the bumblebees.
