Installed new power steering pump and Gear. Steering wheel does not return to center after turn. Bled, yes.?
I installed a type II pump and new steering gear box, I bled the system. It turns and tracks nicely. The problem is that when you make any turning movement the steering wheel has to be moved back to center. If you let go of the steering wheel it just stays there. The effort to move the wheel is the same what ever direction you turn. Also the effort is what it should be. The system has been bled and everything is the way it should be. No noise no binding. The pump is an AGR and the Gear is newer saginaw 12.7 :1, not the orginal steering gear. It drives really nice, except for the spring back.. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is in a 1969 El Camino

Steering gear is set “too tight”. Saginaw PS box has a screw on the top sector cover that sets the “lash” of the gear (clearance between the sector shaft and the worm piston gear rack). This adjustment is critical! If this screw is adjusted “too tight” the gearbox will not “self center”. If the screw is set “Too loose” then there will be a lot of “slop” in the wheel before it starts to turn and the car will not track straight There is a correct adjustment procedure. If the car is properly aligned, then it will track straight and return to center when you release the turning force on the steering wheel. Caster and toe both affect the self centering characteristics of most vehicles. I would Google “Saginaw Steering adjustment” it and take it from there.
