I can’t find the power steering cap on my 2003 VW golf. Where could it be? The manual doesn’t say either…
My Golf hums when I turn, so I can tell that the power steering fluid must be low, but I can’t find the place to put more in it. I’ve checked the manual and it doesn’t even acknowledge the existence of any kind of power steering. Do I just not have power steering, or am I not looking hard enough?
The power steering cap is not labeled for a reason: VW does not want you to add the wrong fluid to the power steering system. The power steering cap is green in colour, you need a special power steering fluid that you MUST BUY AT THE DEALERSHIP!
The fluid is expensive, figure that you will speed close to $20.00 or so for a pint or so of fluid. Adding the wrong fluid to the system will cause the power steering rack to fail; I’ve seen it many times over the years at the dealerships I’ve worked at.
WV, Audi, Porsche, and in most cases, BMW and Mercedes use special fluids for the automatic transmission, power steering and coolant. These fluids are generally only available at the dealership. In addition, all of these (except the 2.0 non turbo four and the current 2.5 liter five cylinder) require the usage of synethic oil formulated to meet VW specification 502.000 for gas engines, 504.000 for the diesels.
