how can i set up multiple pulleys to raise & lower a set of doors that are hinged at the top & bottom?
I have a storage building that i built a door/ramp to get my lawn mower out. the bottom half of the door swings down to form the ramp, the top half of the door hinges up to stay out of the way. the two doors are approximately the same wieght, and I want to design pulleys or similar so that the doors open/counterbalance each other. when openening, the lower doors weight should raise the top half, and when closing, I want to be able to raise the bottom door with the top providing lift assistance as gravity lowers the top door. I hope this isn’t too confusing, i have been trying to figure it out for a while. If anyone knows of any graphics/designs on the web, it would be great. any help would be appreciated.
I don’t want to use counterwieghts, the two doors should be able to counter each other.
I can think of two ways. First is with counterbalence weights with the doors balanced seperatly. For the bottom door think drawbridge with weight(2x door mass) attached to pulley to get more travel in door.Same for top. depending on space limitations several pulleys might be needed to keep weights where they can moove.
You might try garage door springs. look at the pulley setup for single garage door with old pulley/ spring setup instead of the new torsion spring.
Second way is harder to describe. Starting at the top hinge create an attachment point 90 deg from door same distance as door length. Imagine a big carpenters speed square bolted to the upper doorwith 90 deg. angle(pivot point) at top hinge. Now with both doors closed, working from inside, make a connection with a stiff rod, angle iron, from furtherest point of speed square on top door to top edge of bottom door. When the top door is pulled up the rod pushes the bottom door down with equal force and distance.
