what does alternator bearing noise sound like in a ford?
I have a 1989 ford E350 1 ton van with a small block V8. I was driving down the highway and when I was slowing down on the off ramp to the light I started to hear a loud grring/fluttering noise. It slowed its speed a little when I stopped. I thought it might be something in the vents so I flipped the fan switch and just as I did the noise stopped. A little way up the road it started again and continued making the noise untill I shut off the motor. When I restarted it a few hours later, there was no noise. I tried revving the engine but no noise. Could the alternator bearings be going out? The noise was so loud I couldn’t tell where under the hood the sound was coming from. I figured if the water pump was bad it would be dripping but there is no leaks. Also I figured if the Alt. was bad the noise should be all the time. I can’t remove the belt on just the alt. to do a cheep test because it is a 1 belt system. Any help would be appreciated.
Diconnect the altenator fan belt, and spin the alternator by hand.
You will be able to hear the bearing if it is unservicable.
Scwwoooo grindy noise. You will literally be able to feel it if you turn it hard pushing down on the pulley by hand.
There may also be a small amount of movement.
If so buy a new alternator.
It can be reconditioned if you wish.
I always put on a new one as this means I never have to bother with it again.
The alternatior will reqiure a 12 or 13 mm spanner/ 1/2 inch in the US. Use your jack handle to put a good amount, but not too much, tension on the belt.
Might as well put a new fan belt on while your at it.
Also feel the water pump in the same manner, if the fan moves up and down through the shaft, the bearings are US.
Hope that helps Coopss
