Suburban rear wheel bearing question?
I have a 94 Suburban 4×4 with a 10 bolt rear. I pulled the axles and noticed there is an oil seal behind the bearing. The auto parts store has record of a seal behind the bearing and it doesn’t show a seal in the Chilton manual. I don’t see how I can get the bearing out with a slap hammer without damaging the seal. My question is how does the bearing get any gear oil if there is a seal? Do I need to pack the bearing with grease?
A 10 bolt rear end should have a seal in front of the bearing.
After you remove the center pin and pull the c clips, the axle slides out. Just behind the hub there should be a seal and behind the seal there should be an axle bearing. The bearing is lubricated by the rear end gear oil in the housing. The seal should be less than $5. If you destroy it pulling the bearing, no big deal. Just replace it.
