How to remove doghouse on GMC safari van?
I need to look at the rear top of my engine and find no easy way to remove the doghouse from inside without paying a mechanic an hour of time.
If it was easy they wouldn’t charge extra. The professional grade tools used to remove the cover are expensive. The procedure requires a mechanic’s time. An inexperienced person can damage the plastic trim or might mis-align the gasket sealing the engine compartment from the passenger area.
There are several 8mm and 10 mm bolts and screws holding the trim on, then there are 2-13MM screws securing the doghouse to the floor, then there are 2-15 MM bolts that secure and align it into the firewall. They require a 36″ long extension and a swivel socket.
A technician spends hundreds of dollars just for the small amount of tools used to do that job.
I used a 1/4 ” drive air ratchet and Snap-On 1/4″ drive 8 and 10 MM sockets with a 3″ extension. Then I used a Snap-On 3/8 drive ratchet , 24″ extension and a deep 13MM socket to remove the floor bolts. Then I used a 3/8 air ratchet , a 36″ extension and a 15MM swivel socket to remove the firewall fasteners. After a while I could do the job (removal) in about 10 minutes and reinstall it in about the same, not counting the time required to get the tools out , clean them and return them to the main roll away tool cabinet. I did not break the plastic trim and all the fasteners were reinstalled into their locations.
