Insurance payment for car damage/theft?
Hello,
The fuel tank on my truck was punctured by a thief who stole my gas. This damage and theft is covered by my comprehensive insurance. The original tank is stock plastic. I want to install an aftermarket steel tank. If the cost of the steel aftermarket tank + installation is less than a shop installing a re-manufactured OEM plastic tank, would the insurance company cut me a check for the amount of the re-manufactured tank installation, and let me do what I want with it? Or would they go for the less costly install of the aftermarket steel tank?
Each state has laws for this kind of thing. In the state where I live the insurance company must replace the exact part that is damaged. They try to force you to have it done by their company friends. I refuse and tell them I will accept a check only as I don’t have the co payment at this time. Try it, it may work and then take your vehicle to the place of your choice.
